Patches: Six Months That Changed Lives
Six months ago, a dog named Patches quietly walked into Arthur’s life.
She wasn’t the biggest dog. She wasn’t the fastest. She didn’t have any special training certificates hanging on a wall. But from the very beginning, there was something different about her.
Patches seemed to understand people.
During those first six months, she became more than a companion. She became a constant presence during long days, challenging moments, and countless hours spent helping others through crises, training, and community outreach.
It didn’t take long for Arthur to notice that Patches had a remarkable ability.
Whenever someone was struggling emotionally, she seemed to know.
At a community mental health event, dozens of people gathered to learn, share their experiences, and seek support. While everyone else was moving from one conversation to another, Patches wandered through the crowd at her own pace.
Then she stopped.
A young man sat quietly by himself. Outwardly, nothing seemed wrong. But Patches walked straight over to him and sat down beside him.
The young man looked surprised.
Patches gently rested her head against the man’s leg.
For several minutes neither of them moved.
Later, the young man admitted that he had nearly turned around and gone home. He felt isolated and overwhelmed. The simple act of a dog sitting beside him reminded him that he wasn’t completely alone.
That was Patches’ gift.
Over the next six months, stories like this became common.
Patches greeted emergency responders after difficult calls.
She sat beside people during mental health discussions.
She comforted those who had experienced loss, stress, anxiety, and uncertainty.
Sometimes she would simply place a paw on someone’s knee.
Sometimes she would lean against them.
Sometimes she would just sit quietly nearby.
And somehow, that was exactly what people needed.
One evening, after a particularly demanding week, Arthur sat outside watching the sun disappear behind the Namibian horizon.
The work was never-ending.
There were always more people to help.
More training to deliver.
More lives that needed support.
As he sat reflecting on the challenges ahead, Patches walked over and settled beside him.
No barking.
No excitement.
No demands.
Just quiet companionship.
Together they watched the colours of the sunset spread across the sky.
In that moment, Arthur realised something important.
Not every problem requires a solution.
Not every difficult moment requires words.
Sometimes healing begins simply by being present.
Six months may not seem like a long time.
But in those six months, Patches had reminded countless people that they mattered.
She had offered comfort where there was sadness.
Calm where there was anxiety.
Hope where there was despair.
And although she was only a dog, her impact reached far beyond what anyone could have imagined.
To many, Patches was a companion.
To some, she was a source of comfort.
To others, she was a lifeline during a difficult day.
But to everyone whose life she touched during those six short months, Patches was proof that sometimes the greatest heroes walk on four legs.
And every day, with a wagging tail and a kind heart, she continued her mission:
Helping one person at a time.
Because sometimes the strongest form of support doesn’t come from words, training manuals, or grand gestures.
Sometimes it comes from a gentle nudge, a warm presence, and a loyal heart.
Sometimes it comes from a little girl named Patches. πΎβ€οΈ

Namibia’s Mental Health Crisis Is No Longer a Warning. It’s a reality.
Every number tells a story. Every statistic represents a life. Every life lost leaves behind a family, friends, colleagues, classmates, and a community forever changed.
Namibia is facing an escalating mental health crisis. During the 2024/2025 reporting period, more than 100,000 mental health service contacts were recorded, while the national suicide rate reached 18 deaths per 100,000 people, significantly exceeding the African regional average of 11 per 100,000.
The trend is deeply concerning:
- 2020/2021: 1,172 suicide attempts | 679 suicides
- 2021/2022: 1,772 suicide attempts | 745 suicides
- 2022/2023: 2,322 suicide attempts | 623 suicides
- 2023/2024: 2,937 suicide attempts | 542 suicides
- 2024/2025: 475 suicides recorded
- January to April 2026: 124 suicides already reported
Between 2020 and April 2026, Namibia recorded 3,188 suicides, of which 2,710 were men, meaning men account for approximately 85% of all reported suicides. On average, 1.38 people lost their lives to suicide every single day during this period.
These are not just statistics.
They are our sons and daughters. Mothers and fathers. Brothers and sisters. Friends, neighbors, colleagues, and classmates.
For every life lost, many more battle depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, substance abuse, and hopelessness in silence.
This is why RES-Q-NAM launched the Hope for Life Campaign. https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/res-q-nam-hope-for-life-campaign
Our mission is to provide suicide prevention education, mental health awareness, crisis intervention training, emotional support programs, community outreach initiatives, and early intervention resources throughout Namibia. Together with Patches, our emotional support dog, we are working to create safe spaces where people can find support, connection, and hope before a crisis becomes a tragedy.
